These Boots are Made for Walkin'

On the liner notes for the original recording of Nancy Sinatra's breakout LP in the swingin' 60s of the above title it begins with Nancy asking her producer (and writer of the actual music)  Lee Hazlewood, how she should sing the song. He replies, "Like a 16 year old girl who's been dating a 40 year old man but it's all over now." This should give you some idea of the era and the mores. Nancy wrote this song's lyrics and it's right on target given that it was the beginning of 1966 when it was released but I always think of this song as the beginning of liberation of women in a much broader sense of the word. Have a listen:

Today would've been Billie Holiday's 100th birthday, so in honor of her and her formidable talent I am submitting this slice of her musical prowess. She happens to be my all-time favorite singer so it's a real privilege to present her flair for Jazz. Enjoy !

I hear this song every now and then on someone's cell phone and I really wonder if anyone ever got it. Aqua may be singing about Barbie's fantasies but this one was obviously just a male fantasy and not particularly funny but definitely weird in a world of women still fighting for equal pay and equal say...
